The "21" Drill
Tom Tucker's "21" Drill For Core Strength and Swing Speed
I'm giving this drill the seldom bestowed "TCT Guarantee" that this drill will work like
a charm if you do it religiously 3 or 4 times per week.
This Rotary Swing or One Plane Swing drill is composed of 3 parts:
21 swings with a couple of training aids,
21 swings with your driver, and
21 opposite swings with a SwingBuilder swing fan
Note: if for some reason you can't get the training aids, just do Part 2. This will help your swing speed,
but not as much as if you also develop your core muscles with Part 1
For all swings done in golf posture, maintain your Rotary swing plane, maintain
your forward bend spine angle, and keep your front heel on the groud while turning back for your coil.
Part 1 - perform 3 sets with 2 minutes of rest in between
These swings are done as 1 set, no rest between each training aid except for the time it takes to change:
- 7 Orange Whip Trainer
horizontal continuous speed swings - upright posture, swing it like a baseball bat making sure to
set your wrists halfway through the turn back
- 7 SwingBuilder
swing fan horizontal continuous speed swings - upright posture, swing it like a baseball bat - gradually build from medium speed to full speed by the 7th rep
- 7 continuous speed swings with your driver - good Rotary swing golf posture - at 75% of your max effort
- maintain perfect Rotary swing form with these 75% driver swings
Part 2 - after 3 sets of Part 1, rest 2 minutes then do this:
- 21 full, continuous Rotary swings in golf posture with your driver - first 7 swings at slow to medium speed, last 14 swings at full speed.
Perform the last 14 swings as fast as you can while still maintaining good Rotary swing golf posture and
maintaining your balance at the finish of each swing.
- No pauses, turn back - turn through all the way to the finish, then transition immediately
to the next turn back - turn through.
Part 3 - rest 2 minutes then finish with this:
- 21 medium strength
SwingBuilder swing fan horizontal continuous speed swings - upright posture - done in the opposite direction.
Orange Whip Trainer
Alternative
A long shafted driver with a senior shaft and very heavy swingweight. You
can add lead tape to the clubhead to increase the swingweight, the extremely flexible shaft is key.
You could have a clubmaker make you one with a closeout head and the cheapest shaft and grip he can get.
On the Golfsmith website I found a new fairway wood head for $15, a new graphite
shaft for $9.99, and a good grip for $1.49. They charge $10 to assemble a club for you,
and then shipping would be on top of that.
SwingBuilder
These are pretty cheap on ebay, use the keywords "golf swing builder fan"
If you choose to not get one, you can use a broom - keeping the bristle end vertical
as it passes through the impact zone, or a driver with the headcover on, but the
swing fan is far superior to either alternative.
